Awesome Extra Credit Lab of the Month

Complete the activity listed on the site link and report back to me about what happened.  You can video yourself and send it to me, write a report, or document it in the class wiki, but be sure to explain the science of what you did!

Okay, last month I called you stinky.  Well, if it wasn't true last month, it's June,  summer is coming and it will be true shortly.  Try this homemade anti-perspirant to keep you less sweaty-stinky this summer.  Anti-perspirant Lab

Hey Stinky, here's one for you!  Make glycerin soap and wash yourself this May.  Follow the instructions, bring me a bar, and explain the difference between soaps and detergents and how they work.  You'll come out of this extra credit assignment smelling sweet!  Glycerin Soap Lab Here is a website built by some students who have done this lab.  No copying, but check it out by clicking here!

Here's a lab for April.  Since you have some good lab skills at this point, try this lab and create your own acid/base (pH) indicating fluid.  Complete the lab as it's listed filling in the worksheet, and then bring me in your testing results. Red Cabbage Lab.  There's some additional information some other students found out doing this lab.  I've placed at the bottom of this column.

This March I'm going to try something I never have done before, HOT ICE!  Check out this lab and bring me in a sculpture of what you create, as well as a description of what happened to the reactants. Let me know how it goes.  Oh, and as the title suggests, be careful not to get burned!  Hot Ice Lab
Here's the results of one teams work on this lab: Lab Video

For February you can do the Mentos and Soda experiment.  Remember, that fr credit you need to not only do the lab and document it, but also explain what happened chemically when the experiment occurred!  Mentos and Soda Lab
Here's one scientist's ideas on why it happens. Are they right? Watch the video.

In January we make our transition to chemistry so try this lab on for size.  When you're done tell me, in detail, what temperature does in this lab.  Ice Cream Lab

For December you are going to do an experiment on can crushing.  You can potentially get burned so make sure you have some adult supervision.  Do this lab, video it if possible, and give me a step by step illustration of what happens using vectors to show the forces involved.  Crush the Can Lab

In November you can make a coffee can racer!  When you've built the racer, answer the questions at the end of the lab and connect all of our vocabulary to it, then report back to me. Coffee Can Racer Lab

For October, I have another density related lab.  It is very much like what we've done in class, but try it at home, explain it to your family, and record it on video if possible.   7 Layer Density Lab.

For the month of September you can earn extra credit doing some diving!  Check out this lab for the details.  Cartesian Diver Lab.

For the summer I decided to have a fun mystery lab.  When you are done, e-mail me your results.  Enjoy!  Rock Candy and Crystals Lab.
