Class Information - The Tender
WHAT SUPPLIES WILL I NEED?
As a student you will need: a BOUND composition book. Graphing is best, but any will do. You will also need glue, scissors, a set of colored pencils and a sharpener. Other than these materials, the typical supplies (pens, pencil, loose paper, etc.) will be used.
If you are a parent, please understand that large amounts of money are spent every year for your students to do the many projects they do. If you can make additional donations by providing materials listed below or by making a cash donation (see the bottom of the page), it is GREATLY appreciated.
Some other things we could REALLY use are:
I'VE GOT IT ALL!
Mrs. Gold got that last of what we needed! Woo! Woo!
Thank you so much for sending me everything we need for this year!!! You are all awesome!
If you would still like to donate through Paypal,

WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING?
Physical Science Students: For simplicity sake, this physical science course will cover basic chemistry, simple physics, and a small portion of astronomy.
NOTE: To view all of the topics your students will study this year in detail for either science course, click here to get access the California State Content Standards. Click again here for the Common Core Standards.
Literature Enrichment Class: If your student is enrolled in this enrichment course, please understand that this is NOT a reading class. This class is designed for students to become more adept at analyzing literature for deep meaning and symbolism. In addition to this primary focus, your student will also participate in language development, vocabulary building, and analytical writing as secondary goals. There is no assigned homework for this class.
HOW WILL I BE GRADED? ...HOMEWORK, TESTS, LABS, and PROJECTS.
Your student needs to understand that they will be graded using the following rubric format. Understand that the core of your student's grades comes from projects and tests which demonstrate their understanding of the material, but your student will also receive three homework grades each quarter and those points will be assigned using the three-point rubric below. Prior to all projects and tests, students will be given study guides and/or complete project requirements.

FINAL POSTED GRADES My system is designed to really push students for exceptional grades. It also stimulates the inquiry process that is so important in science. At the end of the quarter, the students total points will be compiled and a percentage will be calculated as follows: A=90+%, B=80-89%, C=60-79%, D=50-59%, and F being less that 50%.

Sample Five Point Rubric
- 0 = Nothing completed (F)
- 1 = Pieces missing from the assignment (F)
- 2 = Flaws in a completed project (F)
- 3 = The assignment was completed to instructors specification without errors and demonstrates an understanding of the material. (C) Note: The abilities of the typical 8th grade student, based on my experience, is often used to calibrate the criteria for this level.
- 4 = Qualifies as a three, but includes improvements recommended by the instructor, or reflects a deeper understanding of the material. (B)
- 5 = Qualifies as a four first, but has added substantial work by going above and beyond as approved by the instructor. Fives are generally awarded to those students who have thoroughly mastered the material and are able to expand on the ideas.(A)
Sample Three Point Rubric
- 0 = Nothing completed (F)
- 1 = Performance not to standard (F)
- 2 = Performace has met the standard (C)
- 3 = Student performance has exceeded the standard (A)

Interactive Science Notebook
The interactive notebook is a teaching, learning, and organizational tool that is gaining widespread acceptance around the globe. The interactive notebook is the cornerstone of this class and your student will be responsible for the set up of the book, taking notes, and interacting with their notes. This book can be used on tests, homework, and to report to you what they have learned. If for any reason your students loses the many reference sheets used, please feel free to print another copy from the files below. For more information on how this tool is used, please visit the "Video Tutorials" page.
