This week we're getting into how to describe materials/substances. Have a discussion about what are pure substances and what materials are not. I'm going to back away from this discussion and watch you guys monitor each other. Be respectful as I will be watching, but discuss how you know something is a pure substance and what is not. Be sure to evaluate what others think.

A pure substance would be 24k gold, because theirs nothing mixed with it. And something not pure is platinum because of all of the different metals in side of it. It makes it impure

I agree with Russell because 24k gold is pure. However, any other karat is NOT pure because it's mixed with more than one substance. I observed that water is a pure substance because it only contains H2O. On the other hand, salt water is an impure substance because it contains H2O and sodium chloride.

A pure solid substance would be iron due to it only being made up of that element(atomic number 26), a unpure substance would be steel, it is made up of iron and carbon, and is man made.

Ok. Would'nt copper be a pure substance because it has its own elements and isn't mixed with anything else. On the other hand, glass is mixed with quartz and othe elements. Therefore glass would be a mixed substance and copper is a pure substance.

I think that gold is a substance becuase copper and gold are basically the same thing.

well, this is actually a question for Mr.Casey wouldn't PAPER be a substance because in class that's what u said and everybody on the blog is talking about pure gold but couldn't something as simple as paper be a substance???:)

Good subjection but paper is many different types of chemicals and woods so, no would isn't a pure substance

A pure substance cannot be separated into any other kinds of matter by any other physical or chemical process. It also is made up of the same particles so therefore copper is a pure substance because it's only made of copper atoms. Other examples are of water and table salt.

Also tin, sulfur and diamond are examples of pure substances. Something I found is that some people say that homogenous mixtures can be considered examples of pure substances.:)

Homogeneous substances can be changed into just a mixture of one substance. An example would be salt water because if the water dissolved, it would leave salt behind. The opposite of homogeneous is heterogeneous. A heterogeneous mixture only appears to be one substance when it's actually multiple substances. An example would be orange juice. Sorta off topic.

A pure substance is only made up with one element, such as oxygen.

Diamond is a pure substance. However, contain impurities in their lattice structure that are other elements, so technically it is slightly a mixture. But not really. Gasoline is a mixture because it has various hydrocarbons such as heptane and octane, and additives. Comments are closed.
