Take a look around on the internet and give me some of YOUR explanations of what an acid and a base is. ZERO credit if you just post someone else's work here. Read, interpret, and write in your own words. I'd really like to hear about what kid of ions are involved.

Vinegar is a acid and a base is hydrogen ions

What makes a acid is how low its PH is, what makes a Base is how high its PH. Something like a acid would be like vinegar and something like a base would be baking soda.

The chemistry of acids and bases is the chemistry of reactions on which protons are transferred. Acid is any compound or ion which yields hydrogen ions in water soultion and a base is any compound or ion which yields hydroxl ions in water solution.

Come on Jill, explain what this means. Talk about it from what we know so far. "hydrogen ions" "hydroxl" explain what those are. 3/22/2012 12:03:16 pm
acids and bases are based on a scale. acids are compounds that break into hydrogens. bases are compounds that break into hydroxide. positive ions break into acids.negative ions break into bases.

Good start McGarvie, but you need to explain what you're talking about. Give us an example of "...compounds that break into hydrogens" and " ...compounds that break into hydroxides"

Acid has a sour taste, can cause corrosion to metals and contains Hydrogen. When you add acid to pure water, which is neutral, H+ ions are released into the water and as the active ingredient, are responsible for the reaction. Comments are closed.
